A fire watch security guard is responsible for monitoring and overseeing areas or buildings where fire safety systems (such as sprinkler systems, smoke detectors, and fire alarm systems) are temporarily out of service or during fire-related emergencies. Their main duties include identifying and responding quickly to potential fire hazards, ensuring the safety of occupants, and taking immediate action in case of a fire incident.
OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) and NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) require trained fire watch guards to be stationed at locations with a high risk of fire. Fire watch is typically implemented when built-in fire safety systems, such as smoke detectors or sprinklers, are not functioning. It is also necessary in areas prone to natural fires or during large public gatherings and events. Additionally, fire watch is legally required when performing “Hot Work” such as welding, cutting, or brazing at sites that lack permanent fire safety systems.
Fire watch guards receive specialized training in fire prevention, safety regulations, and emergency response procedures. They must have sufficient knowledge of fire hazards, emergency exit routes, and the correct use of fire extinguishers. Depending on local regulations, they may also be required to obtain certifications such as Fire Safety Director or an official fire guard license.
The duration of a fire watch depends on the specific circumstances and safety requirements of the site. This period can range from a few hours to several days or longer, depending on factors such as the downtime of fire safety systems, the level of fire risk, or the duration of events and construction activities.
Fire watch guards must maintain their primary focus on fire prevention and rapid response in emergency situations. While patrolling, they may provide limited assistance with access control or report suspicious activity, but their main responsibility is always monitoring for fire hazards.
Fire hazards can only be properly identified and managed by trained and experienced professionals – your current staff cannot be temporarily assigned to fire watch duties. Alpha Eagle Security provides reliable and straightforward fire watch solutions, giving you peace of mind. We start by offering a customized quote and then deploy our guards to your site within hours. Our team of fire watch experts ensures that your event, conference, or public gathering is safe and fully compliant with safety standards.
No one delivers these services better than our agency, a fact proven through years of hands-on, professional experience.
