Fire watch guards monitor buildings and areas where fire safety systems are temporarily out of service or during emergencies, ensuring the safety of people and property. They identify potential fire hazards, respond quickly, and take immediate action if a fire occurs.
OSHA and NFPA require trained fire watch guards at job sites with elevated fire risks. Fire watch is typically needed when built-in systems like smoke detectors or sprinklers are not operational. Guards are also necessary in wildfire-prone areas or during large public events. Additionally, fire watch is legally required during “Hot Work,” such as welding or brazing, at sites without proper industrial safety equipment.
Fire watch personnel undergo specialized training in fire safety, codes, and emergency response. They are knowledgeable about fire hazards, evacuation procedures, and proper use of fire extinguishers. Depending on local regulations, they may also hold certifications like Fire Safety Director or Fire Guard.
The duration of fire watch depends on the situation and safety requirements, ranging from a few hours to several days or more, depending on system outages, ongoing fire risks, or the length of a project or event.
While their primary focus is fire safety, guards can assist with access control or report suspicious activity during patrols. However, their main responsibility always remains monitoring and preventing fire hazards.
Fire hazards can only be properly assessed by trained professionals – your existing staff should not be reassigned to fire watch duties. Alpha Eagle Security makes fire watch simple, providing peace of mind every step of the way. We offer a customized quote upfront and can deploy guards to your job site within hours. Our fire watch experts ensure that your construction project or building site remains safe, compliant, and on schedule.
